SpamAssassin Advanced Spam Protection in WebHostMost

SpamAssassin is an advanced, AI-powered spam filter built into WebHostMost that analyzes Email content using machine learning to protect your inbox from spam, phishing, and malware. This guide shows you how to configure SpamAssassin in your WebHostMost Web Control Panel.

What Is SpamAssassin in WebHostMost?

SpamAssassin is a powerful spam detection system included with all WebHostMost Email accounts. It uses machine learning and content analysis to automatically score and filter spam emails before they reach your inbox.

How it works in WebHostMost:

  1. Email arrives at your WebHostMost mail server
  2. SpamAssassin analyzes the Email (headers, body, attachments, sender reputation)
  3. Assigns a spam score (higher score = more likely spam)
  4. WebHostMost takes action based on your configured threshold

Key SpamAssassin features in WebHostMost:

  • AI-powered machine learning analysis
  • Pattern recognition and content scanning
  • Learns from your feedback over time
  • Customizable protection levels and thresholds
  • Whitelist (trusted senders) and blacklist (blocked senders)
  • Works alongside your custom spam filters → Spam Filters guide

Accessing SpamAssassin in WebHostMost

  1. Log into your WebHostMost Web Control Panel
  2. Navigate to Email Manager > SpamAssassin Setup
  3. Review the Basic Configuration section
  4. Configure Blocking Strategy, High Score Block, and threshold settings

  • Active blocking strategy
  • Manual edit option for advanced users (experts only)

Blocking Strategy

This setting tells WebHostMost what to do with emails SpamAssassin identifies as spam:

OptionWhat WebHostMost DoesWhen to Use
InboxDelivers all emails (no blocking)You want to manually manage spam
Main SpamboxMoves spam to main spam folder in WebHostMostRecommended for most users
User SpamboxSends spam to individual user's spam folderMultiple users need separate spam folders
DeletePermanently deletes spamVery confident in SpamAssassin accuracy
Recommended Setting

Main Spambox is the best choice for most WebHostMost users. Spam is quarantined but you can still review it via webmail if needed.

High Score Block

Configure SpamAssassin's aggressive spam detection:

OptionBehaviorUse When
No (selected by default)Use standard global thresholdNormal spam volume
YesBlock all emails scoring higher than custom thresholdSevere spam problem

When "Yes" is selected:

  • You can set custom high-score threshold
  • Emails exceeding threshold deleted automatically
  • Provides maximum protection
warning

Be careful with "Yes" option! Emails above threshold are deleted permanently.

Global Threshold Settings

The threshold determines when WebHostMost SpamAssassin considers an Email to be spam. Lower number = more aggressive filtering.

ThresholdProtection LevelWhat It MeansBest For
Low (5.0)Maximum blockingEmails scoring ≥5.0 = spamHigh spam volume

Recommended for WebHostMost: Start with Medium (6.0) and adjust after 1-2 weeks based on results.

Subject Rewrite

SpamAssassin can optionally rewrite subject lines of detected spam:

Option: "Do you wish to rewrite the subject of a spam e-mail?"

  • No (default): Leave subject unchanged
  • Yes: Prepend a marker like "SPAM" to subject line

Benefits of rewriting:

  • Easy to identify spam emails in inbox
  • Can sort by modified subjects
  • Helps with Email rules and filters

Common rewrite format:

Original: Important Account Update
Rewritten: ***SPAM*** Important Account Update

Spam Delivery Options

Option: "Don't use attachments"

If spam Email contains attachments:

  • Enabled: Removes attachments from spam emails
  • Disabled: Keeps attachments

When to enable:

  • Reduce storage space
  • Prevent malware delivery
  • Remove potentially dangerous files

Option: "Use attachments"

Differences in handling:

  • Original message preserved as attachment
  • Body modified but archive saved
  • Better for compliance/recovery

Option: "Use text-attachments"

  • Original message converted to text-only attachment
  • Useful for archival purposes
  • Reduces complex formatting

Whitelisted Emails (Trusted Senders)

Emails from whitelisted addresses bypass SpamAssassin filtering in WebHostMost and always reach your inbox.

"No whitelisted e-mails" means:

  • You haven't added any trusted senders yet
  • All emails are evaluated by SpamAssassin
  • No automatic inbox delivery for specific senders

To add trusted senders to WebHostMost whitelist:

  1. Enter Email address (e.g., [email protected])
  2. Press Enter or click Add
  3. These senders will always reach your WebHostMost inbox (never blocked)

When to whitelist:

  • Important business partners or clients
  • Company newsletters you want to receive
  • Family members or VIP contacts

Blacklisted Emails (Blocked Senders)

Emails from blacklisted addresses are always treated as spam by WebHostMost, regardless of content.

"No blacklisted e-mails" means:

  • You haven't blocked any specific senders yet
  • All emails evaluated by normal SpamAssassin rules
  • No automatic blocking for specific addresses

To block senders in WebHostMost blacklist:

  1. Enter Email address (e.g., [email protected])
  2. Press Enter or click Add
  3. WebHostMost will always treat emails from this sender as spam

When to blacklist:

  • Persistent spammers who keep emailing you
  • Known phishing or scam Email addresses
  • Annoying marketers who won't unsubscribe you

Bayes Data (Machine Learning)

Bayesian learning is SpamAssassin's AI system that learns from your WebHostMost Email patterns over time.

What it does in WebHostMost:

  • Analyzes your spam vs. legitimate Email patterns
  • Learns what YOU consider spam (personalized to your WebHostMost account)
  • Gets smarter over 1-2 weeks as it processes more emails
  • Improves accuracy automatically based on patterns

Bayes Data Management:

  • Accumulates learning data over time
  • Can be reset with "DELETE DATA" button
  • Resetting clears all learned patterns
  • Takes about 1-2 weeks to re-learn after reset
warning

Use "DELETE DATA" only if:

  • Filter is very inaccurate
  • You want fresh learning start
  • Bayesian data is corrupted

When to reset:

  • After major spam surge
  • When filter becomes ineffective
  • If migrating to new account
  • For troubleshooting purposes

Tips & Best Practices

  1. Start conservative: Use Medium protection level (6.0 threshold) initially
  2. Review spam folder: Check weekly for legitimate emails caught
  3. Whitelist important senders: Add trusted Email addresses
  4. Report spam: Help SpamAssassin learn from mistakes
  5. Monitor changes: Give filter 1-2 weeks to adapt
  6. Adjust threshold: Raise if missing legitimate emails, lower if spam getting through
  7. Check settings: Verify blocking strategy and high score block are correct
